Graduate Program: Overview

The Dietetic Internship prepares dietetic practitioners in the areas of medical nutrition therapy, sports nutrition, food service management and community nutrition as evidenced by the evaluations of their skills and knowledge by their preceptors during the internship. Graduates of the Florida State University Dietetic Internship Program are competent professionals who demonstrate lifelong commitment to education and professional growth and provide outstanding service to their employers, profession and community.

Missions Statement

The mission of the Florida State University Internship in Dietetics is to provide a post-baccalaureate route for graduate students to complete the experiential requirements needed to write the national registry examination for certification of registered dietitians by the Commission on Dietetics Registration. This program provides interns a choice of specializing in either clinical nutrition or sports nutrition providing 1200 hours of supervised experience. The mission of the Internship in Dietetics is consistent with the mission of the university which is to serve as a center for advanced graduate and professional studies. It is also consistent with the mission of the College of Human Sciences and the Department of Nutrition, Food and Exercise Sciences which is to enhance the well being of individuals and families through educational activities focused on research, health, the environment and technology.

Program Goals

The goal of this program is to prepare graduate students who desire advanced academic and professional training to:

  1. meet the need for registered dietitians in the state of Florida as well as the rest of the country, and,
  2. become professionals who seek and deliver innovative solutions to the challenges of contemporary society.

Become Credentialed

To become credentialed as a registered dietitian (R.D.), a student must complete a post-baccalaureate dietetic internship and pass the national registration examination for dietitians.To be licensed to practice dietetics in the state of Florida, the requirements of the Division of Medical Quality Assurance of the Florida state Department of Health must be met.
